Sonoma–Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) has been providing regular trail rides across Sonoma and Marin counties since June 2017. Once completed, the railway has created a connection between Cloverdale in the northern Sonoma County and Larkspur Landing in Marin County. The railway provides bicycle-pedestrian pathway as well.

Initially, the railway has been connecting the Santa Rosa Airport with the north end of Santa Rosa and downtown San Rafael in Marin County, or vice versa.

The SMART train has the overall capacity of about 158 seating passengers, 160 standing passengers, and 24 bicycles. The accessible restrooms, Wi-Fi, and even a snack bar are available on the trains.

For those moving across the city by feet or with the bicycle, the construction of the pedestrian and bicycle paths has already started; those paths shall be located along or near the railway.

Sonoma County Airport Station is just a mile east of the airport and stops near the Santa Rosa Airport and Regional Parkway. The station is located at 1130 Airport Blvd., Santa Rosa Sonoma County Transit offers bus service to the airport and adjacent sites from the station. The Parkmobile provides the parking facilities; the fee per-day stay is $2 and $20 for the month. Attractions located near the station include Pacific Coast Aviation Museum, Kendall-Jackson Wine Estate & Gardens, Hilton Garden Inn hotel, etc.

Santa Rosa North is located in the remote access to the station on Range Avenue at Coddington Mall. The station is located at 1500 Guerneville Road, Santa Rosa. The Santa Rosa CityBus and Sonoma County Transit serve constant transfers from and to the station. There is no parking area available near the station. Attractions located near the station include Charles M. Schultz Museum, Snoopy's Home Ice, Snoopy's Gallery and Gift Shop, Children's Museum of Sonoma County, Coddingtown Mall, Sandman, etc.

Santa Rosa Downtown located in the remote access to the Santa Rosa downtown.  Golden Gate Transit, Sonoma County Transit, Santa Rosa CityBus, and Mendocino Transit are providing transfer services to and from the station. Railroad Square and Downtown Santa Rosa offer parking area near the station per special fare. The ParkSMART provides free, wheelchair-accessible parking area. Petaluma Downtown is located in the remote access to the Petaluma Transit Mall on Copeland Street. The SMART Southbound Railway starts its operation at 04:19 each day until 18:49, the Northbound trains are running from 5:59 until 20:35. On the weekend the trains are running from 10:13 until 20:50.

A particular transit card, SMAT EcoPass, might be purchased by schools, businesses, official agencies to provide a further 50 % for senior citizens above 62, children, people with disabilities and reduces mobility.
